In the case of Stockwell VS. Minnesota the defendant only tried to have one peaceful conversation with the alleged victim. She was charged with stalking. Now the state of Minnesota charges a person having a first conversation with a person as felony stalking. If you can charge anyone who approaches someone one time with stalking then there is no free speech. Also the jury did not believe the alleged victim of the stalking. With no evidence other than someone’s word the police made charges against a Minnesota citizen who just wanted to have a conversation.

Before going, I had ideas about what I thought concerning the situation between Palestine/Israel. Things became so much more concrete after spending time there, passing through check points, being surrounded buy the wall, learning about the imbalance of rights to infrastructure like water, walking through Aida Camp, spending time in so many peoples homes and hearing their stories. Mostly fell in love with the place and the people. I travel a lot, but this place has gotten under my skin in a way like not other. I can’t wait to go back!

Unfortunately, people have very short memories and tend to generalize based on scant anecdotal evidence, especially when there is power to be gained by disparaging and pitting one group against another. Not that many years ago, people who terrorized African Americans called themselves Christians and burned crosses as a symbol of their belief that Christianity justified their actions. More recently, the “troubles” in Northern Ireland were a struggle between Protestant and Catholic, and the terrorists neither side were Muslim.

Your father is a coworker of mine. He has taught me a great deal about Islam. He is one of the most gentle souls I have ever known. I know he is very proud of you.
